Folk School X  March 5-7, 2010:

Time to Register

Almost 150 participants and artists/teachers are expected for Folk School X, March 5-7 at Mikell Conference Center near Toccoa, Georgia. 

Our annual Folk School provides an opportunity for participants to discover or rediscover their creative gifts, to meet diverse people from all over the southeast, to enjoy music, the mountains in the Springtime, and great food. Teens are welcome to come with parents or grandparents. 

Roger Ard will be the director and keynote speaker on Saturday morning: Hands and Soul: The Lathe of Creation.

Offerings this year:

Acrylic and Water Color Painting: Adventure with Textures. We will experiment with at least 10 textures for our paints and DISCOVER some exciting new ways to create beauty on paper and canvas.  Bring your favorite paint colors.   Supply fee $10.00.  Jim Curtis

Appalachian Basketry: Weave one or more classic basket styles from rattan reed and sturdy hardwood handles.  Beginners as well as more experienced weavers are welcome.  $15.00 for materials..  Jan Stansell & Lavonne Markel

Appalachian Hand-Tied Brooms: Make a cobweb broom and a small whisk broom using traditional boomcorn on natural handle. Beginners welcome. $10-$15 for materials.  Lenton Williams.


Copper Enameling: Practice different methods of applying colorful enamel to various copper forms, and firing them in a kiln to create small art pieces and jewelry—or design a project.  $12.00 for supplies.  Judy McDonald & Elizabeth Allan


Creative Writing: "Writers Helping Writers".  We will share ideas on methods for creating conflict for the characters in our fictional writing, tips to use in writing and how to create hooks that will cause our readers to turn the page for more. We will practice these techniques in short writing activities and share more ideas as time allows.  Margaret & Dick Ingram


Felt Making: An art form that is both fun and messy.  Discover techniques from ancient to modern.  We will make wall hangings.  Create a picture using wool fiber - some needle felting and some wet felting.  Cost is $25.00.   Becky Walker & Linda Allen

Knitting: An art form that is fun, versatile, and easy to learn!  Beginning knitters will master the basic stitches with the stockinette scarf pattern.  Intermediate knitters can learn to knit in the round and make an I-cord with a baby hat pattern.  $15-$20 for supplies.    Kat Ballard & Marie Brown

Pottery: Work with the potter’s wheel or hand build pottery and figures in clay.  For beginners and experienced potters.  $10.00 for supplies. (Class limit 10). Robin Hickey and Patty Caldwell

Quilting: Class is designed for quilters of all levels, including beginners.  Machine piecing and rotary cutting techniques. Bring a sewing machine if you have one..  Hala Hess White

Scroll Saw Creations: Learn to use the scroll saw with different mediums – variations such as wood, silver, paper Scroll.  Material fee determined on price of silver – possibly $20-$25.  Class .  John Turner

Stained Glass: Participants will build a simple stained glass panel using the copper foil or lead method, You will learn basic stained glass techniques, including: glass cutting, breaking  and grinding, the copper foil (Tiffany) or leaded glass construction method and soldering.  $25 for supplies.  Ethel Wright and Joan Martin

Weaving: We will be working with wool in this session.  Options for our participants: Weave an evening bag, beautiful shawl or washable place mats.  Cost for materials will be $15 .  Max Thomas and Ann Lynn Whiteside

Wood Turning: Learn to turn a bowl, make boxes, candlesticks and pens.  Each participant from beginner to experienced turner will work at their own pace and skill level. $10 for supplies.    John Moss, Joy Moss, Michael Waugh, Roy Bruner

Cost for the weekend: $180.00.  (Represents a $5 increase in Mikell’s fees).

Inner-city Art Centers

We suport two art centers in the Atlanta inner-city: The Friendship Art Center at Holy Comforter Church and The Community Art Project at Emmaus House.  Friendship Center works with people who have mental or developmental disabilities, and the Emmaus House Project works with people of all ages who live in the Peoplestown neighborhood of Atlanta, near the Capitol.  Both offer a full range of activities, including crafts, wood turning, painting, computer graphics, potters, weaving, etc. Check out these centers and their ministries online:
