Mr.fun
Mr.fun
Some years ago as I was making my way down a hallway at Hanna-Barbera, I was suddenly pulled aside by one of the studio’s writers. Maybe his title was story editor, but I’m not sure. Anyway, the tall, grey-haired gentleman was an animation veteran named, Lars Bourne. He asked if I would be interested in writing segments for a new cartoon show?
First of all, that’s a pretty good way to score a writing gig. To simply have someone ask you to do it. I had been trying, without much success to do some writing for television. Now, here was an opportunity being handed to me.
The Bungle Brothers segments were part of “The Kwicky Koala Show.” I suppose the most significant thing about “Kwicky Koala” was the association of animation master, Tex Avery. Tex had developed the show for Hanna-Barbera, or rather, tried to develop the show. After being shoved through the studio’s creative processing system, the final result was nothing like Avery had imagined.
Anyway, for guys like Scott Shaw! and myself it was an opportunity to write wacky cartoon stuff again. In fact, if you look closely at the color cel setup, you’ll notice that the scene is even a Scott Shaw! layout.
I’m sure no one remembers “The Bungle Brothers” today. However, for the few cartoonists left at Hanna-Barbera, it was still a lot of fun to write. Sadly, because of failing health, Tex Avery had to leave the show, and eventually we lost him.
“Kwicky Koala” finally went on the air, and like its name, quickly disappeared forever.
