Ask, Seek, Knock

One of the most quoted verses in the Bible, as it relates to receiving from God, is Matthew 7:7-8.

For those that need a refresher, it reads, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Many times when Christians are in dire want of something, they turn to this passage for comfort, support, and direction. Similarly, when Christians are in want and they seek another Christians advice, this passage is the first Scripture said friend points them to.

But here’s the interesting thing I’ve observed over the past few years in the lives of those who immediately run to this passage to get what they want.

Many don’t actually get what they’re looking for. How about you? Let’s be honest.

Many who ask, don’t receive the answers they’re looking for. Many who seek, don’t end up finding what they hoped to find. And those who knock are still waiting for doors to be opened.

Many of us, when asking, seeking, and knocking, have resorted to more of a “crossing-the-fingers” than actually believing. Yet, at the same time, I don’t think it has anything to do with having more faith or believing more. After all, that’s one of the first things people say, right? You just need more faith. You have to believe more.

If you read the passage a little further, there’s something that Jesus says I think many of us skip over. In verse 12, Jesus says, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

My guess is, those of us asking, seeking, and knocking, have a huge struggle with giving. Sure, we’ll give our tithes and the minimal amount we think is required from God, but we have yet to move towards a lifestyle of giving.

See, Jesus is simply saying many of us who ask, seek, and knock aren’t giving to those who ask, seek, and knock from us. And when we ask Him for things, we’re only getting from Him the extent at which we give.

Jesus once said he didn’t come to be serve, but to serve. Jesus was all about giving. Many times, all we can think about is taking, yet we hesitate when it comes to giving.

For those of you looking for that last minute book for your summer reading list, I highly recommend “The Furious Longing of God” by Brennan Manning.

Brennan Manning, if y’all remember, became famous for his book “The Ragamuffin Gospel”.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about the book if you’ve already read it or once you’ve finished reading it.
