They like to say to themselves, “I got a real good catch.”

It seems more appropriate if we brag about the good catch that our women got. (But then I start to wonder, “Am I such a good catch?”) It will be of more benefit to her if I focus on being a good catch and do less bragging about how awesome she is.

It is a question that kind of causes some anxiety for me. I really would like to know what important thing I will be doing in the future. And what should I be doing now to get there?

Tonight, I was reminded of the two great commandments that God gave to the Israelites and Jesus reminded his disciples. Love God with all; love your neighbor as yourself. This is how I should prioritize my life, and this is where my focus should be. I should not be looking to some imaginary future, plotting out how I will make a name for myself. My planning should mostly be focused on the daily actions of loving God and man. He will direct my paths from there...He really will.

Record reviews are an odd thing. I think that is because music depends so much on personality and taste. So, rather than review The Innocence Mission’s album and provide a recommendation, I will just write a few of my reactions.

My favorite Innocence Mission albums are Birds of my Neighborhood and Small Planes. I like their simpler, less polished works. I had secretly been hoping that they would create more records like the two I mentioned. It is; and more. The biggest surprise for me was the three instrumental tracks. I can’t think of any other IM instrumentals. These tracks are simple and beautiful--worth the price of the album.

So, what do I think about this album?

I like it.

It is not about having Him figured out, but rather about grappling with the emptiness of life. I will be referencing Ecc. 2:10-26; please read it.

My mind exist in a place where I need to be wise, and not mess up, and do the right things, and support my family, and eat, and sleep, and use the computer. It all ends up feeling like toil for me quite often. These are not bad things; but I am just not finding joy in them. And this brings us to where the scripture hit me. “A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness...”

It as if He whispers “Enjoy me. Let me make you, who you are striving so hard to be.”

So, may you feast and smile and remember who makes this all possible...

I think too often we read too much into this verse. We read it something like this, “and He will direct your paths, and you will understand what He is doing, and you will not have confusion, and you will like what He does.” It is a comfort to me that in the midst of my confusion God has directed and will direct.

I understand what it is saying, but what exactly does that look like?? A few days ago, I read past verse six and learned some ideas of practical ways to acknowledge Him. Rather than regurgitate them here for you...check out the rest of the passage on your own, if you are so inclined. It is pretty straight forward. It usually pays off to read more.
