Singing Tips

with proper Singing Tips you can learn how to sing. I have created this blog to share with you some of the Singing Tips that have helped me improve my voice.

I first started singing in October of 2007 and I really sucked I mean I could not carry a tune if my life depended on it. All my life I have wanted to sing and play guitar but I have always been to afraid to actually step up to the plate and sing in front of people.

Ever since I got my drivers license I have been singing in the car rocking out to my favorite songs. I used to sing in the car when i was driving alone because no one could hear me. The problem I faced when singing in the car  was, I would always try to match my voice to the voice of the person singing the song on the radio and I would never really find my own true sound.

The hardest thing you will have to learn how to do is find your own voice. It sound simple but it’s not.

Below are a list of the fears I faced when learning how to sing. See if any of them relate to you and I will show you how I overcame them.

The fear of sounding like crap.

The fear of people making fun of me.

The fear of singing in front of family and friends

The fear of practicing vocal exercises in my own house because I was worried about what the neighbors would think.

The fear of committing to the emotions of the songs I would sing.

The fear of never sounding good.

The list could go on for a long time.

So here is what happened and how i got over my fear of singing. Let me know if any of this relates to you. I was sitting in my house alone one day playing my guitar and trying to sing quietly so the neighbors would not hear.  The song I was trying to sing was “Patients”   by Guns N Roses I got so frustrated because I was trying to be quiet so that no one would hear me sounding like crap. I felt like I was suffocating inside of my own skin. It got to the point where i got so frustrated I yelled out FU**!!.....  FU**!! Fu**!!! I Though to my self this is FU**ing STUPID !  “who gives a dam if people can hear me and they think I suck Fu** them” ( please excuse the language this is how I felt inside)

I put down my guitar I cranked up my stereo as loud as it went and I sang “ Patients” as loud as I could not giving a dam who could hear me. When the song was over I picked up my guitar and I sang that dam song as loud as I could. I sang as if it were going to be the last word to ever come out of my mouth and man did it feel GREAT!! I had no vocal coaching or anything like that and I did not sound that good at all but you know what I got over my fear of being heard by others.

Here are a few Singing Tips I want you to keep in mind when you are learning to sing.

  1. -When you are doing vocal exercises and practicing your songs songs think to yourself “ If people can hear me and they think i sound like crap they can kiss my ass, at least I have the balls to stand up pursue something I’m passionate about”  also remember this quote  “ Those who mind don’t matter” I can guarantee you that anyone who is going to judge you is living a miserable life. The bottom line is no matter what you choose to do in life you are not going to live forever. Robert Ringer said it best  he said “ In the game of life we don’t make it out alive so why play conservatively”  Always keep this in mind.

  1. -Every time you sing think to yourself. “ If this where the last time in my life where I get to sing how would I do it ?”

- You have to always commit to the emotion and express the song how you feel it.

As long as you feel you have expressed yourself you have succeeded.

- You need to remember this. Singing and life all is about expressing yourself and showing the world who you are. In one of my favorite Rise Against songs called “Paper Wings” there is a line in the song that says “ Is this the life that you lead or the life that’s lead for you” Think about that for a minute.  Are you living your life??? Or are you living a life that has been chosen for you ??

Ok so let’s move onto somethings you can do to work on the mechanics of your voice. I found this video below on YouTube that has some good singing tips.

Here is another Singing Tip if you are afraid to sing in front of people. Get a webcam record yourself singing and put yourself on YouTube. You don’t even have to use your real name. I put myself on YouTube and sent it to all my friends. Just with me knowing that they have seen me sing on YouTube made me feel like I had already sang in front of them and when they asked me to sing for them in person it was almost like I had already done it. I was still really nervous but I already had positive enforcement  before they heard me.

Heck if singing in front of a webcam still makes you nervous sing into a voice recorder so you can at least hear how you sound and improve.

Here below my first YouTube Video I sent this video to everyone I know. Yes it made me a bit nervous but i figured what the hell I only live once and this is who I am and I want to share it with you.

The bottom line is this. As long as you feel you have expressed yourself and had fun that’s all that counts.

Every day I do vocal exercises for 5 minuets and sing for at least 20 minutes weather I want to or not. If you just get the discipline  to do this everyday and you will progress remember it’s in the moments that you don’t feel like you are moving forward that you are and that my friend is what will separate the winners from the losers.
