The road to seward - pt 2 - bear!!! glacier!!! bear!!!
Sunday, July 12, 2009
After seeing the bore tide - we continued on down the road, passing through the town of Portage. We had decided not to stop too often on the road south - to make sure we got to Seward at a good time to do things there.
We stopped at a beautiful river where gold was discovered in 1859 - and there was a turn out there with the nicest porta potty I have ever seen. These seem to be all over the Kenai peninsula and were very well taken care of, clean and would be nice in the winter.

Not too far down the road - we pulled off the highway and into the Kenai Fjords National Park - we wanted to visit the Exit Glacier. It is one of many glaciers in the National Park - but this one you can walk right up to with very little effort. We visited the visitor’s center and got our orientation as to which trails to take and headed of to the glacier.

And on the way to the glacier - we passed a group of people telling us that a bear was ahead on the trail.... so we walked up the trail and found a bear!! A juvenile black bear - here is video of it -
Then we made it up to the glacier - OMG what a fabulous experience. This glacier is retreating up the valley - and there are signs throughout the park that have dates on them - that show you were the glacier was in previous years. It is melting and you can see the water pouring off of it. It is also beautiful!!
We made it to the glacier - took a few photos and noticed how COLD it was up there!!

The blue color of the glacier is just out of this world!!! Now this is Alaska!
After a return hike down from the glacier, and a stop at the melt water river that carries the ground up “rock flour” from the mountain downstream - we came across our friend the bear again!!!
