THANK YOU to all who came out to sing!

Nobody pays attention
The trick to singing Karaoke for the first time is to immediately tell the crowd that you are a KARAOKE VIRGIN. This always gets their sympathy right away. Then when you do show them how bad you suck, they will be more likely to join in with the fake applause when it is activated.

The second tip is to select the right song. Don’t sing some stupid slow song right away, ESPECIALLY DON’T SING “PICTURE!” Liven the crowd with something to get them laughing or singing along like the Asshole Song. Maybe you and your friends can take turns picking songs for each other to sing.
Look at you, sitting at home, on line, reading this website. That is sad!
Grab the remote, turn off the television, clean yourself up a little and come on out and sing some Karaoke! You will not only feel good while doing it, but you will meet many others who love doing it too. Karaoke doesn’t have to be painful. Just think of it as interactive, group therapy.

Bad Investment

I had WYME40FM pens made.  $200 for 1200 pens that were gone in 60 days.  The servers kept them every gig.  Now I use golf pencils.  The waitresses give them back to me at the end of the night.  $80 for 1400 golf pencils.  “Thanks, I was looking for that”.

You’ve never done Karaoke ?

My favorite Karaoke group, “Sorry, I’m Dating My Roommate”.

WYME40FM Karaoke launched them into their adult lives.  (Not responsible for where they landed.)

What am I doing here?

They say find something you love doing and you will be happy. Six years ago if you would have asked me if I did Karaoke I would have laughed and said no. I have been involved in the restaurant/bar business since 1981 when I was hired as a club DJ in Walnut Creek, California. The two owners of the oldies club trained me how to work the crowd and soon I became the main DJ playing to about 300 people every Friday and Saturday nights. The music was in 45 and 33 1/3 record format. (What a pain in the neck) Every record had to be cleaned with anti-static spray first and then cued up. Another DJ came into that club once per week and did Karaoke, but I stayed clear and never went in that night.
In 1993 I returned to Ohio and again found myself being the main DJ in a club in Hamilton three nights per week. Every Wednesday a guy came in to do Karaoke and he messed up the sound system. After a few weeks, I told the club owner if she would give me Karaoke night, I would buy the Karaoke music. She did and the first thing I did was build a new stage that looked like a shower stall. It was very popular since everyone sings in the shower anyway, why not do it in public?
It still took me another year to understand what Karaoke was really about. Two regular female managers from the local McDonald’s kept asking me to sing “Love Shack” with them every week. I obliged, but it was not until about the tenth time did I get it. During the song, I was standing in the corner of the shower while looking out at the audience and then down at the gals, one on each side of me, screaming the “bang, bang” part of the song, It was at that moment that the feeling and understanding of what Karaoke was all about came over me. I suddenly experienced an exhilarating feeling. It felt good! I realized it was about having fun and dropping your inhibitions and singing your song. It has nothing to do with whether you are any good or not. I was never afraid to sing again. Singing Karaoke is about getting on stage, singing one of your favorite songs and letting it rip. It is all about the experience. It is an escape with a feeling similar to having a day off. It relaxes you, makes you forget about your troubles, some people have told me they feel like they took a short vacation after a night of Karaoke at a WYME40FM event.
Every night I am entertained by the singers. It is very enjoyable except when people start screaming their songs into the microphone.
I sit back and watch as the momentum of the night builds. I always enjoy the song selections and most of the performances. I am lucky to have such a great profession.
I saw my favorite comedian, Steve Martin performing live at Lake Tahoe years ago and he said the following during his act, while playing the banjo,

“I GET PAID FOR DOING THIS!”
Need I say more? Come on out and sing a song, you will be telling all of your friends about it tomorrow.

It’s all about having FUN!
