I can’t believe that it is already day three of this term’s club. Just goes to prove that time flies when you’re having fun!!

The week so far has gone really well. The Czech team are settled in and there have been lots of bonding sessions with the MAH team – games nights, Bible study and swimming as well as working and serving together.

Caeser’s Geezer and his Roman Relics are proving to be a great hit with the 100+ children who are coming every morning. Like his predecessors, CG is a bumbling fool with delusions of grandeur who is continually baled out by his much smarter subordinate (that’s me!) I don’t know why but Carl seems to slip so naturally into his role…………………

The drama has kept the children on the edge of their seats..…..well, the edge of the carpet at least! There have been some great games and competitions and the obligatory gunging.

As usual the visiting team have borne the brunt of this particular favourite! First Ondrej, then Hannah then Philip who rather wimpishly refused to sit down and instead let the gunge drip on his head! Tut, tut. Where are all the real Czech men???? Whose turn will it be tomorrow I wonder?

The social programme has been a big hit with trips to Barry Island, Cardiff city centre and Caerphilly as well as the usual hanging out at the centre.

Now we are gearing up for the Friday night Roman feast which promises to be a spectacle and a half. There’ll be songs, drama, games……well, everything that goes on in the club really ! Oh, yes….and a scrumptious Roman feast………….OK a bit of a buffet then! But the puddings are all home made.

See you there!!

Well, it’s only five days until a team of young people will be arriving from the Czech Republic in time for yet another Thornhill Church Holiday Bible Club extravaganza! And this time they are very young young people!! The average age seems to be about 17 (if you factor Brian and Martin out of the equation, of course!!!)

The theme for this next club is the Romans – cue ‘Caeser’s Geezer and his Roman Relics’. (Well, what did you expect?)

The hall will be transformed into ancient Rome and there is sure to be lots of the usual madness and mayhem which seem to be an integral part of the HBC experience – at least at Thornhill, anyway!

We have recruited an even bigger and better ‘Mission at Home’ team of our own young people and are really looking forward to seeing that work again. It was such a blessing last time and we have great expectations for this team as well as a great social programme!!

Just the last minute details to sort out now – accommodation, costumes, scenery, the drama script………oh yes, and lost craft materials. Has anyone out there seen about 60 runaway horses? Answers on a postcard please.

Professor Fossil made his last ever visit to Thornhill Church yesterday morning in an upbeat HBC morning service. We had songs, power phrases, an Egyptology quiz, a short sketch, a calming Psalm and a drama-based sermon.

After a delicious fellowship lunch the team began to dismantle the set and very quickly the hall returned to its usual state.

The team returned to their host families for tea and then spent the evening in Cardiff Bay, walking and bowling. It was a last opportunity for the team to say goodbye.

This week has been a wonderful experience, not least because, as Debbie reminded us during the morning service, an estimated 120 families have been reached through the club and have heard the name of Jesus.

The Mission at Home team did a magnificent job and fulfilled our hopes and expectations for the week. All of the young people at Thornhill had been invited to join the team and those who did honoured both themselves, their families, their church and, above all, they honoured God.

We followed the story of Moses through the week and looked at how he answered God’s call with a heart full of self-doubt and fear, yet God provided all that he required. In the same way our own young people answered that age old call and we watched them grow and flourish in His care. Well done, guys – may you be an inspiring example to those who missed out!

One of our power phrases for the week was from Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
he will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.

I am certain God has delighted in the HBC team this week. He has given us strength and rest and we have felt Him with us.

At 7.30am this morning a small group turned out to wave off the visiting teams.

Goodbye to all of you – Evija, Zane and Janis (Latvian group) and to Martin, Oli, Dada, Jaja, Adam, Honza, Jakub (Kuba), Tereza, Petra, Zbysek, Dascha, Jonas, Adela and, of course, Brian.

We wish you safe travel and we pray God will richly bless you all for what you have done in His wonderful name.
