The purpose of this home page is to provide information of interest to classmates from the U. S. Naval Academy Class of 1965. Its nature is dynamic. The intention of this page is to make it easy for classmates to find out information on other classmates and class events and to facilitate the exchange of communications with classmates, especially by email. If you will, it will function like an interactive bulletin board for our class. The contents can be modified pretty easily. I welcome suggestions from other classmates as to how to improve the effectiveness of this information service.

Report on Jerry Robinson’s Passing

Jerry's brother, Bruce, informed us that Jerry passed away about 0500 last Thursday. Since 2002, his wife, Anne, has done a "herculean" job of providing the love, care and attention that Jerry needed to have as good a life as one could expect with his disabilities. Over the years there were setbacks and his health and strength deteriorated such that he could do less and less for himself. Anne hired in-home nursing care as necessary to help with day-to-day requirements needing more than one person.

Last February Jerry suffered another stroke that again forced him into the hospital.  It was the stroke from which his body could not fully recover and he has spent the last year in and out of hospitals and care facilities as well as being home as much as possible.  On January 22nd he was taken to the hospital with pneumonia and kidney failure in a fight that was impossible to win.

You will not be surprised to know that, as Jerry has done his whole life and in every event, he fought completely with everything in his being.  He never lost his mental capabilities, and his memory put those of us who are healthier to shame. To Jerry!

Anne's contact information is:
Anne Hale
1012 Druid Avenue, House # E
Charlottesville, VA. 22902

Jerry will be missed, especially by his fellow Crew Team Members. Please keep Anne and Jerry's family in your prayers. For an obituary on Jerry, click here.

Paul Reason Selected as Selected as Distinguished USNA Grad

Congratulations to Paul Reason (ADM, Ret.) on his selection as a 2010 Distinguished USNA Graduate - a fitting capstone to an outstanding career. Paul will be honored at an award ceremony on Friday, 16 April in Alumni Hall.
Also selected were Mr. David J. Dunn '55, Admiral Leon A. Edney '57, Rear Admiral Thomas C. Lynch '64, and General Carlton W. Fulford Jr. '66. If you reside near Annapolis, Jim Minderlein asks that you please put this date on your calendar so we can have a good turnout of classmates in support of Paul for this ceremony .

Shipmate Columns

Most of you have seen a lot of the traffic on the Alumni Association cutting back the number of Shipmate editions published each year. Just to let you know, I plan to publish - here on our website - one each month, and get them up here a couple of months ahead as if I had just submitted the material to the Shipmate. Posted the April 2010 Shipmate column on 02 Feb and the March 2010 Shipmate column on 27 Dec. Posted the Jan-Feb 2010 Shipmate column on 08 Nov. Will keep columns for several preceding months posted since the Alumni Association publishing schedule is sorta spotty. In addition, I have now converted these columns to PDF format so you can read them on your PC screen or easily print them out so you can read a hard-copy or even download them to your Blackberries or iPhones.

So just click in the Navigation Bar above on Shipmate Articles and when on that page click on the column you desire to read. At least this way, I am not restricted to a 2000 word count (lower if I use photos). So check out the recently posted July’s column when you have a chance. Aloha, Dave

On Day 4 of the HVA’09 festivities in Waikiki, Jim Taylor is in possession of the "Having Too Much Fun" award to date. His may be an act too tough to follow to be relieved of this recognition.

Six 14th Company classmates and wives

converged on Waikiki the week of 16 Nov

for the  6th running of the annual Happy

Valley Alley festivities. Couples hooking up

with Dave and Judy Anderson are: Jim and

Chris Taylor, John and Leahray Wroten,

Fred and Anne Hufnagel, George and

Loulie Kent and Gordy and Frankie Clarke.

On Monday night, Nov 30, Navy won a wild basketball game when star player, Chris Harris '10,  hit a 3-point  "buzzer-beater"  from mid-court to give Navy the victory, and of course the final score was Navy at 65 points to the opponent's 62 !!  In the photo is an improbable intersection of life !   Left to right are Adam Holton '93, Forrest Horton '65, Linda & Phil Ferrara '65, and friend David Pritchett.  But sitting behind us all evening was Midshipman First Class Steve Hughes '10.  We learned that his grand uncle is our classmate, Pat Cooper '65 ! !  And, btw, both of his grandfathers are USNA graduates in the 1950's !

It was a great gathering of 14 at McGarvey's saloon for the 02 Dec Annapolis Lunch Bunch! Photo by Phil.

Just a couple of pics from the Navy-Delaware game Tailgate. Go to the Classmate Photos section to see a bunch more, courtesy of Phil.

On Oct 8th, Wayne Goodroe, Mike Malone, Ron Wecht and

Doyle Borchers got together for the 5th annual Bay Area 65

Golf Game. This year they played up in Santa Rosa. Beautiful

day. Some moments of brilliance on the links. Good camaraderie

followed by dinner over good wine and tapas at Willi's Wine

Bar in the Sonoma Valley. You’ll see: Wayne, Ron, Mike and

Doyle in the pic. Doyle’s home should be rebuilt by the end of

the year newer and better. This time they are installing a photo

voltaic system that will virtually zero out their electrical bill,

driving down their carbon footprint! And yes, he drives a Prius

PHOTOS and 40th REUNION NEWS!!

Our real web wizard, Bull Durham, offered up his web experience and resources to host all of the many photos taken at our 40th Reunion and others through October 2008. Henceforward, since I’m, like Bull, running in the Mac environment, I’ll post somewhere in this site all the photos that come our way from Classmate events. To get to Bull’s array of photos AND to the great on-line Class Dierectory he hosts, bookmark the following website and check out a slide show of all the great photos our intrepid Class Fotog, Phil Ferrara took at the Tailgate and Class Meeting held at the Navy-Wake Forest Game on 20 Oct. Will keep this link here so you can always get to it from this site. Many mahalos, Bull!!!

1965 SEA STORIES Still Available

Most of you have taken delivery of the magnum opus, “There I was …” the outstanding compilation of sea stories, published by our own class under the stellar stewardship and editorial skills of Dick ZimmermannPraise for Dick’s efforts and the story telling abilities of dozens and dozens of our classmates has been poring in from all over. You’ll see that reflected in the emails sampled herein this column.  If you haven’t yet taken advantage of the opportunity to order and read this superb book, wonderfully illustrated by Don “WaXer” Hallwachs, check the email cited below for the “Z” man. You can order by sending a check ($35 for one copy or $25 each for multiple copies) made out to Richard Zimmermann, 2000 S. Eads #329, Arlington, VA 22202.

If you’re too cheap to buy our Class Sea Story book, for a link to all the glorious 65er Sea Stories that Dick Zimmerman has squeezed out of lots of you and taken the time to compile, and/or if you'd like to read how 65 spent the Vietnam war and see thrilling stories of other at-sea, in-air, on-ground adventures, click here - 65 Sea Stories. You will be at Bull’s Directory site. Scroll down a little and you will see links to several options for accessing the Sea Stories.

Dick is currently assembling inputs from classmates aplenty on our Experiences while at USNA, 1961-65.

Should be available early next year. More on that later.
