Dan Davis

I am a faculty member in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University.  Research in this department covers a wide range of fields in geophysics, geochemistry, mineral and rock physics, and hydrogeology.

My research interests in tectonics, with an emphasis on the mechanics and kinematics of thin-skinned mountain belts, are closely related to those of departmental colleagues Bill Holt and Lianxing Wen, who are extremely active in research related to geodynamics.  Much of my recent research has focussed upon the application of analog modeling to the study of strain in oblique convergence.

My interests in the application of geophysical techniques (e.g., GPR and resistivity) to the study of Quaternary geological features, particularly on Long Island, overlap with those of other departmental colleages, including Gil Hanson who has led the way in advancing the study of the geology of Long Island.

I also have a longstanding interest in amateur astronomy, including the publication of Turn Left at Orion, a highly successful popular guide to the night sky, along with co-author Guy Consolmagno of the Vatican Observatory.  I am a former Faculty Director of Stony Brook's Honors College, a highly selective liberal arts program within the university.  At present, I am the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Geosciences, which offers many opportunities for advanced graduate work leading to the Ph.D., M.S., and M.A.T. degrees.
