The Western spirit began on knolls

with vistas of grasslands and distant hills

where creeks and ponds nourished hope and

dreams took root

where fantasies formed

in the rush of wind and release of care

where one could ride far, far away from

strictures and structures

and breathe deep

of crisp mornings and warm afternoon breezes.

Certain spots have a spirit

that seeps and settles and lifts souls

a place of harmony for man and earth

that rings as sweet and true as a farm hand’s dinner bell

and with an artist’s vision

patterns appear in well-worn paths

new hearts fill historic shells

and the authentic is dusted, burnished

and esteemed.
