Three of the Same
Going through some photos from New Hampshire I came across a set of three variations on the same image. They offer an interesting example of three ways to approach the same exact shot, shifting from more to less realistic, or representative. The image below is the straight shot, I expect I used a polarizer, but otherwise nothing special done.

The first variation is an image overlay. The finished overlay is at the top, the main blog image. The overlay combines a sharp image with an out of focus one. Here’s the defocused image I used:

The ‘glowiness’ created by the overlay helps out this photo a lot, enhancing the colors and overall mood of the image. I created the overlay in camera.

The final variation is a multiple exposure which pushes the image into the impressionistic realm. It offers suggestions of the details, but relies on the larger areas of color and the prominent lines to convey what the subject is.
