Historically Apple has scrimped on default RAM (memory) in Macs. (Hard disks too, but that’s another story.) They’ve gotten somewhat better now—I think most Macs come standard with 1 Gigabyte of RAM. If they don’t, they should. My MacBook is only supposed to have 2 Gigabytes of ‘matched’ RAM, but I took it to 3 Gigs of ‘unmatched’ (a single 1 Gig DIM and a single 2 Gig DIM). It works great.

If your Mac doesn’t have at least 1 Gig and you are running any version of OS X (and who isn’t?), then I—predictably—recommend that you upgrade it. If you can afford it, ‘max out’ your Mac with as much RAM as possible. Why? Because RAM is the cheapest, easiest way to improve the performance of your computer! (This is true for Windows too, although for some reason most of the Windows weanies that I know think that 1 Gig is the most RAM they would ever put in a home computer. I can’t explain it. They think that paging to disk in Windows is some great miracle or something...)

There are lots of places to buy RAM. I suggest the business below for three reasons:

They have a convenient configuration tool for figuring out what to order.
I have never had any problem with the RAM I have purchased from them, and to my knowledge, neither have any of my friends or clients.
I get a commission.

I have written step-by-step instructions on how to order memory for your Mac.

1) Go to my home page: <http://www.unpredictablemac.com>

2) Scroll to the very bottom. You will see an advertisement that looks like this:

3) Click on the [Click Here to Start] button, select Apple.

Then click [Find].

4) On the next screen, which shows different Macintosh models, click on the picture of the iMac (below).

5) You should now be on a page that shows a bunch of different iMac models. Near the bottom of the screen there is a pop-up like the one below:

From the [Choose Your Model] menu, select "iMac G4 Flat Panel ()1.25 GHz, 17-inch, PC2700" (below)

Then Click [Find Memory].

6) From the memory list that appears select "512Mb DDR-333 (PC2700)" (Exactly as it appears below). And press [Add to Cart].

7) At this point you should be able to navigate through the web site to complete your purchase. Standard shipping is free.
