The Great

Daylight Monitor Shootout

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Burbank, CA

A variety of looped footage was fed to all monitors simultaneously, ranging from high-con shots, static and moving scenes and a resolution chart, plus a a broadcast camera for a live feed.

A number of the manufacturers were on hand to answer questions and demo specific features of their monitors.

Products from the following manufacturers were presented:

Boland (HD LCD)

GPI  (greenscreen SD CRT)

LC (HD LCD from Bulgaria)

Lumavec/Blackbird (SD LCD)

Marshall  (HD LCD, OLED)

Nebtek  (HD LCD)

Tiffen  (HD LCD, OLED)

Transvideo  (HD LCD)

XCS (greenscreen SD CRT)

Manufacturers names in bold were in attendance at the shootout.

The centerpiece of the demo was the “rotisserie” where all of the monitors were mounted side-by-side on a rack to simulate the typical Steadicam monitor viewing position. The rotisserie was rotatable through a 90 degree tilt (horizontal to vertical) to evaluate viewing angle; the entire assembly was pivoted for different orientations to the sun.

A definitive hands-on test of the all-important daylight performance of current and upcoming monitors suitable for professional Steadicam application.
