Located in the center of historic Isle La Motte, this restored 1930s classic “new standard” schoolhouse offers that opportunity you may have always wanted - to get away with sleeping in class. Two huge rooms double as dorms or private B&B accommodations . Breakfast is served in the old school lunchroom. Lunch and dinner are easily obtained at local restaurants in the area or you can walk to our country store one block away, the pizza/creamie establishment one block further, or the South End Cafe a couple miles down the road. Anyone dining on pizza is welcome to help themselves to a free salad from the garden (depending on what’s growing at the time). House dressing provided.
Bike racks and internet service are provided. For movie buffs, there’s a large library of videos and DVDs. For those who like to entertain themselves, there’s a good sized library, board games and puzzles, chalkboards and chalk for drawing, one piano, one guitar, one drum, and a theater symphonic orchestral organ. (Quiet time begins at 10 PM). And of course, there’s the great outdoors . Sitting around in the backyard watching the sunset over the lake and Adirondack Mountains, playing badminton , weeding the garden ( for those people who get restless on vacation and are looking for work). Isle La Motte is known for its tranquil bike paths by the lake and through woods and farmland. Swimming is about a mile away at St Anne’s Shrine and at the Alburg Dunes State Park (vtstateparks.com/htm/alburg.htm) just off the island. A golf course is 4 miles away.
Isle La Motte also features some rare geological features not seen anywhere else in the world. In 2009, the Chazy Fossil Reef was awarded the designation of National Natural Landmark. To learn more about this and the 2 visitor sites, go to www. ilmpt.org . Fisk Farm on the southwestern tip of the island is the old homestead of Lt. Governor Nelson Fisk. It was here that Teddy Roosevelt got the news that President McKinley had been shot. Today it is a charming visitor site with concerts and art shows in the horse and carriage barn and an a la carte (come as you are) tea garden on Sunday afternoons in July and August. For a schedule of events, go to www.fiskfarm.com
St. Anne’s Shrine (www.saintannesshrine.org) is a very popular spiritual and historical attraction on the island. Site of the earliest white settlement in Vermont , it offers free swimming and picnicking on its waterfront beach.
The Champlain Islands are a rich resource of activities and tourist attractions, all within easy biking and driving distance. Check out the Chamber of Commerce website at www.champlainislands.com
