Welcome

Projects…everyone has theirs, some more intense then others.  My project starts back in May of 2003 when I purchased a 1960 Airstream Pacer; a Travel Trailer.  Intrigued by their design and functionality, I educated myself on their history.  I discovered that these trailers have been manufactured since the 1930’s.  Ask anyone who knows Airstreams and they will tell you how these Vintage Trailers have more integrity then those manufactured today by the same company.  There is just something about their lines.

As an Architect who’s roots stem from Construction, the integration of the design process and it’s construction drive me.  I believe that good design enhances ones lifestyle and begins with satisfying the Program of Function.

My Trailer Program maximizes the potential of having a minimal mobile footprint:

1.Travel accommodations for those out and about adventures

2.Home base during the construction / renovation of my residence

3.Mobile office for my design build construction projects

4.Guest quarters, as an extension of my home

As this project develops over the years I realize the importance to: maintain focused, enjoy the process and continue to learn.

I hope you find this process interesting at the least.  I know that the more progress that is made the more excited I become.

Helping hands

Darren

-a fellow Architect and good friend.  Darren’s prior career was based in custom architectural millwork and finishes. He has aided me in my millwork design and remains a great resource for those saturday morning phone calls.  Sadly I do not have a picture of him.

Bret

-a proud owner of a 20 foot aluminum box truck...once we polish it up it could be a great tow vehicle for the trailer?

Elena
-my new project manager...

Todd

-photographer / part time professional polisher.

Brian

-offering a helping hand from time to time.

SEV

-my brother...Carpentry is my passion in life; music just pays the bills.”

Curtis

-an old neighbor, wondering when the finished trailer is going to roll into his NY state neighborhood.

Javier

-Javier has worked on several of Bosco Architect’s projects over the years. His helping hands are much appreciated.  The installation of the belly skin is definitely a two person job.

Keith

-a fellow Architect and great friend from work...when not traveling in his free time, I try to trick him into helping me with my Trailer...a good burger and some beer and of course if I let him play  classic rock on the radio...Keith has since moved back to LA.

Mike D

-a fellow Architect, great friend from college...shares the understanding that good design takes determination.  Mikes past help on the Trailer is much appreciated! He has since moved to Austin, Texas furthering his Carer in Architecture. A good Trailer Project will scare friends away like that.  “Add five bosco, add five.”

Lucien

-a mentor and friend.  Whether its being taken apart and rebuilt or simply fabricated from scratch...Lucien has the solution. He has done it all and then some. “When in doubt, rip it out.”

You

-always looking for a helping hand... if I am ever going to get this project done.

the demise

Thoroughly examining the Trailer generated a lengthy list.  The original trailer incorporated details that compromised the longevity of its structure.  Many structural connections have corroded due to galvanic reactions between dissimilar metals.  The structural plywood sub floor that sandwiched the aluminum shell to the steel frame was rotten in many places.  Two cantilevered frame members were sheared at their conservative welded joints.  The wheel wells were also deteriorated which in turn corroded the trailers frame.  Unfortunately most of these circumstances are not visible from initial perception. Only after you are fully committed toward restoration / renovation can you collect your can of worms.

the rebirth

My intent is to structurally rebuild this trailer creating a once again safe vehicle for travel.  This will call for the proper detailing with regards to the elements and material compatibility.  I wish to maintain the exterior’s vintage sight lines while redesigning the interior to be more conducive to my lifestyle.  In the end I wish to have an Airstream with all the modern amenities while displaying my love for modern, functional, environmentally conscious design.
