    So there it was...

This was the last EAST in my studio, I am moving over to a larger space at Pump Project Satellite.
Just down the road, north on Shady, there is a well landscaped, bright green building and that is the Satellite.

Here is how my studio looked if you missed your chance to visit.

Or at least, how the entrance looked.

The Fierce and Furry pieces sold like hot cakes, which I guess means served flat and more than one per customer.

Though the flow of viewers seems slow, it was steady, and though I didn’t make millions of dollars and become a drugged out rock star, I did get a chance to look like one.

Well, this is it, day two of the East Austin Studio Tour Week. If you don’t know already I have a space at Pump Project Art Complex, as do about thirty other artists, so this is a great spot to stop and take in as much as you can.

Things went pretty well yesterday, and I sold a number of pieces, mostly a bunch of Fierce and Furry pieces. Theses are a collaboration between Joelle Geisler and myself, check them out at www.fierceandfurry.com.

Anywho, don’t forget to check out our new annex, Pump Project Satelite, just down the road from The original Pump Project.

Now off to the races......Inside j.haley's studio during EAST at Pump Project Art Complex

Mrs. Jimmy Stewart & the Near-Human Hand - Cheri Weaver at BiRDHOUSE

The weekend before last I was out of town and missed some great shows, but luckily I was invited to a closing at BiRDHOUSE gallery for Cheri Weaver’s work.

I may have said this before but when I first landed in Austin, I saw a show at Cafe Mundi. It was the first signs of intelligent art life-form I had come across. It was a show of Cheri’s and it propelled me to attempt, and succeed, at getting a show for my work at Cafe Mundi. Since then, Cafe Mundi has expanded and is still hanging great (and maybe a few not so much to my liking) shows. It is rumored that Cheri Weaver will have a show there coming up real soon, so keep your ears/eyes open. I will tweet/plurk/quip/spew about it when the time comes around.

Well, about her most recent show...

I was very impressed. BiRDHOUSE is an eclectic venue, one half of a duplex that was once one house but now two, and offers new talent to stretch themselves out for a one night event. So far every show I have seen there has either impressed me, or... well... let’s just say that I have never been, “this show kinda sucks.”

Again, lucky for me, Lady Weaver persuaded Sir Kevin Foote to open the doors one more day, a rainy Saturday afternoon, for a closing reception. I walked from my home some 1000 steps + or - 50 and found myself trapped by the rain. Actually I really enjoyed my time being one of the few there, with the rain keeping others away and giving me an excuse to chat it up longer.

Cheri’s work, of my knowledge, consists of old papers with cutesy yet scary illustrations and other applications, like needle worked thread. She says that she likes to find the beauty in the ugly, she wants people to enjoy an event and celebrate all sides, not just pretty pictures. I am paraphrasing, so don’t quote me that I quoted her.

This show was a bit different from what I was used to seeing. Bringing in new work, Cheri utilized old photographic plates, picked up at flea markets and the like. She painted on these images creating a family album of sorts, a family of yeti. She displayed the work in collections with a set of antlers acting as an installation anchor, giving the sets a look as if they were hung above a mantle.

There was a series scattered amongst the works, all repetitive in imagery yet each an original, that reminded me of her work which I have seen before. They were drawn yet had a mounted portrait feel, a portrait of a snarl toothed young fawn with crazy yet soft antlers. Slightly scary, yet you seem to be able to love them.

Cheri challenges herself through her materials and scope, she creates visions for her shows that you could only accomplish if you were rich and had all the time in the world. What she can accomplish though, given reality, is well above the norm and very successful.

There are many layers to her work, more than I can get into here. They have underwritten stories and histories, experiments with materals and imagery. With a tone of seriousness and an amusing internal giggle, Cheri Weaver’s work is well worth a look.

    Side Note
