Just because the season is over doesn't mean the boys soccer team is finished winning. I am very proud to announce the great accomplishments of our team in the classroom. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has announced their academic awards for 2011 and the ADS cleaned house. The team's gpa this season was a 3.73 which earned their eighth consecutive NSCAA Team Achievement Award with a 24th national ranking. They are #1 in KY. Jake Winkler was selected as a Scholar All American. Karl Hempel was selected to the All South Region. John Thompson received the Outstanding Senior Award. These are all national recognized honors. Congratulate these fine young men on their continued excellence in the classroom. GO ADS!!

The Ads season ended in Lexington tonight as the boys were beaten 4-1 by #3 Henry Clay in the first round of the state tournament. Coach Beauman had a good game plan, and the defense repeatedly trapped the Blue Devil's top forward John Manga. A great strike from Drafton had us within 2-1 at the half, but we got their best shot coming out of the break. By the time a frustrated Manga left in the 56th min with a yellow card, we were down three and struggling to get anything going offensively. Playing on turf for only the second time this year didn't help. Mo notched 10 stops - several of the spectacular variety - and the defense again fought hard, but at the end of the day the defending state champs were too much to handle. Thanks to all Danville coaches, players and parents for another exciting and memorable season. Stats below:

Danville 1 Mercer County 0 - Region 15 Championship (2 overtimes)

The Ads came up huge Saturday night in the rubber match of their rivalry with Mercer, beating the Titans 1-0 in double overtime. It's been an unreal postseason run for the boys thanks mainly to their improved teamwork and the inspired play of the defense. Karl, Calvin, Dylan, Damir and Mo again delivered the goods to post their 3rd straight shutout of the post season. With Christian out and Mercer motivated to avenge their 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Ads in the District 29 championship last week, this match was a big challenge. The two biggest plays by the D were probably Karl blocking a sure winner from Tate Spivey off a corner kick in the 12th minute and Mo coming up huge 1v1 vs Mason Angel in the 74th minute. In between there was a lot of back an forth, but I thought Mercer overall had the better run of play – especially in corner kicks where they held a 10-1 advantage on the night. We did a great job marking these and Damir must have had 6 or 7 headers to clear the box on corners alone. We were also strong counterattacking – especially in the second half, when Shawn and Jake got behind the Mercer backline for good scoring chances. The Titans have a tendency to foul when they get beat and that would prove to be their undoing. Jake had a golden chance to win it tipped wide by the Mercer keeper late in the match and Shawn was taken out on three separate occasions before a PK was finally awarded with 1:25 left in the second overtime period. Drafton (who again was all over the field) buried the golden goal to end it and earn the Ads their third straight regional championship and 5th in the last 6 years. Great work and dedication coaches, players and parents!

With the win the Ads advance to the sub-sectional match against Region 13 champion Henry Clay. The game will be played on the turf at Henry Clay HS in Lexington on Monday, October 24 at 7pm I believe. Check back here to confirm. GO ADS!

Sweet win tonight! Write up and stats follow:

Big time soccer at Reynolds field Thursday night as the Ads faced off against the Mercer County Titans in the championship game of the district 29 tournament. The boys put two solid halves together and played hard to earn their third consecutive district title and sixth in the last seven years with a 1-0 win. As usual though the game was not without it's challenges. The two teams played even over the first 20 min with sharp play in the midfield and no one really getting a clean look. The best chance of the half for the Ads was probably when Jake split two defenders in the box, but was tackled before he could get a shot off. The real issue was the red card shown in the in the 33rd minute for dissent which left us man down for the remainder of the match. Cue the back line and captain John Thompson who again stepped up defensively. The boys repeatedly stopped Mercer runs, stole passes and coolly found counter attacking midfielders. Dylan had 3 nice defensive stops on the wing to snuff out chances early in the half. We made it to halftime 0-0, but the Ads were looking at another 40 min with only 10 guys. Outstanding strategy and gritty play kept them in it. With the extra man, the Titans pressed to start the second half and were getting better looks and winning corner kick opportunities. But they were still unable to manage any combination play and Damir headed away a ton of balls lofted into the box. Mercer was also slow to get back when we counter attacked and again looked to be a little tired, chasing and fouling. This led to several free kicks in the Titan's end. A huge goal from Carson off a free kick from Drafton was just what the doctor ordered and put the pressure squarely on Mercer. They tried to respond but the boys did a great job keeping their shape and composure. Smart play and regular substitution salted away the next 20 minutes, but the Titans battled to the end and had two great chances in the 73rd minute. Mo stuffed them both – the last a close range shot from Angel - to preserve a classic Admiral win. Your hard work is paying off boys – outstanding effort!

The win allows us to host next week's region 15 tournament at Reynolds field, where the Ads are now 14-3 lifetime. The tournament will start Monday, October 17 and I think there will be a draw to see if we play Lincoln or Pulaski County. Lincoln beat Pulaski in the District 30 final tonight 4-2. Go ADS!

Classic post season soccer at Reynolds Tuesday night as the Ads win in 2 OTs 3-2 over Marion County to move on in the district tournament. The boys dominated play over the first 30 min, but left a few out hitting 2 pipes and missing a PK. Credit Marion for hanging in and sticking to their game plan. Senior John Southall (who gets my vote for best player in the district) scored on a great individual play to get his side to the half only down one score. Marion showed much better skill than the first meeting with the Ads and really scrapped coming out of the break – eventually getting the equalizer from Chris Carmona with 30 min still left on the clock. The next 10 minutes were key as the defense held firm. Damir, Dylan, Karl, John and Calvin all came up big and the back line allowed only 2 Marion shots from inside the 18 on the night. But the key play in regulation time might have been the stop by Mo Oster on Southall from close range. That play seemed to swing the momentum back to the Ads who went on the offensive over the last 15 min. The boys showed great heart in the OT periods pressuring Marion all over the field. The Knights were just trying to get to penalty kicks when Shawn Ramos pounced on a deflected free kick and drilled it low for the game winner with 2:59 left in OT. Fantastic finish to a great game. Good job boys and coaches!

The Ads were beaten 3-2 at East Jess tonite. Started great, but were sloppy shooting the ball and did not finish out the match. It's not often that we take 22 shots and only manage 6 on frame. Hit the crossbar 1x and missed multiple chances 1v1 and from close range. East takes 3 shots in the entire second half and scores on 2 - both in the last 10 min and the game winner from at least 40 yards. Unlucky, but it should have never come down to that. If we can sustain the effort of the first 40 min x 2 we can beat a lot of teams. Keep your chins up boys! Here're the stats:

Nice win tonight - let's get right right NOW! Write up and stats:

Danville 3 Anderson County 2

At Reynolds Field in Danville, the Ads celebrated senior night in style with a 3-2 victory over Anderson County. DHS had not beaten the Bearcats since September 28, 2006 when Gary Reynolds was still head coach. The opening festivities honored seniors Zaid Siddiqui, Drafton Peck, Dewayne Yocum, Chase Berry, Jake Winkler, John Thompson, Nate Johnson and Karl Hempel and all started for the Ads. AC took advantage of an early corner kick opportunity when Hunter Martin headed in a winner from the back post. They hit the goal post on a similar chance before the Ads could answer. But the boys responded and got on the board in the 33rd on a Noe Ayala finish of a rebounded shot. The Ads did a better job controlling play in the second half, and scored back to back goals from the right side of the box to go up 3-1 with 10 minutes to play. The Bearcats only managed 5 shots in the half, but kept it close with a late goal from Josh Brogan before the Ads salted away the remaining time. Danville finishes up the regular season Tuesday this week at East Jessamine. No word if the postponed match with West Jess will be rescheduled this week. Thanks to all for a great turnout for tonight's contest!

Tough loss tonight. Here's the stats and the write up (if it sounds like I'm whining I am):

Mercer County 3 Danville 2 (penalty kicks)

The Danville Admirals and Mercer County Titans faced off Tuesday night in Harrodsburg in a contest that would determine first place in the district as well as who would earn first round bye in the upcoming district tournament. A large hometown crowd was on hand and they were quickly rewarded as the Titans scored early on a rebounded free kick that Matt Gammon one-timed and deflected in off an Ad defender. Danville was sloppy from the start and committed a ton of unforced errors through the first 20 minutes, and Mercer took advantage. Mason Angel had several good scoring opportunities and converted one in the 18th minute to put the Titans up 2-0. The Ads thought the play should have been ruled offside, but were fortunate to survive the next 10 minutes without further damage as Mercer worked quickly and controlled play. Danville went to halftime down 2-0, and without much good to ponder.

The tide turned quickly in the second half however. From the opening whistle Danville was more confident on the ball and played with purpose. Pressure in the Mercer end led to an early corner kick and a John Thompson header from the back post cut the lead in half with plenty of time left on the clock. Now it was the Ads turn to dominate as they took the play to the Titans. The backline stiffened led by Calvin Steber and Damir Karapandzic and Drafton Peck and Christian Gateskill-Fuqua were winning balls and going forward more aggressively. Gateskill-Fuqua played a beautiful through-ball behind the Mercer defense to spring forward Jake Winkler. Alone 1v1 with the keeper Winkler was dragged down from behind, but no card and no PK ensued. Instead the ball was brought outside the 18. Undaunted, the Ad forward knocked home a winner to tie the match and give Danville new life. The Admirals continued to press and create chances the remainder of the game. Mercer would manage only one shot from distance in the half, and with 5 minutes to play Winkler again found the back of the net with the apparent game winner. However, in a pattern that has tested this team's perseverance all year, the outcome of the match was again determined by the officiating crew as the goal was taken off the board for an offsides call that could best be described as 'creative'. Give the Ads credit for keeping their composure and they continued to press. Gateskill-Fuqua made a terrific cut to the goal and a hit a golden scoring chance just wide before time expired. The sides traded punches in extra time, but the two five minute periods were relatively uneventful before finally going to penalty kicks. Mercer made 3 of 4 and Danville was stopped on their first 3 attempts to give the match and the top seed to the Titans. The district tournament will be held the week of October 11 at Reynolds Field in Danville.

The Ads were beaten 3-1 by Western Hills on Saturday. I thought we came out flat but controlled play over the first 20 minutes. WH took advantage of a couple miscues to go up at the half 2-0. Effort improved and we clearly had the better of the play in the second, but could not finish several scoring opportunities on the doorstep. We are close, but can't afford any more inconsistency. Great effort tonight as the boys played a full 80 minutes against a very solid Lafayette team. I don't believe in moral victories, but the Ads deserved better than the 2-1 loss after having the better of the play over the course of this match. The Ads were beaten 6-0 this weekend at the All A State Cup in Frankfort in a tale of two halves. The first was very competitive and resembled our recent effort against Marion, but in the second Louisville Collegiate took control and dominated wo much resistance. Collegiate followed up by beating LCA 3-0, but eventually lost to Bethlehem 1-0 in Sunday's final.

This was our worst defeat since a 6-0 drubbing at Mad Central's Senior Night on Oct. 9, 2009. Interesting to note that game served as a wake up call and propelled us to the sectional win over Franklin County and the program's first appearance in the State tourney final four. Let's flush this, learn from it and move on with similar resolve. Go Ads!

Prep Soccer: 'Flat' Danville drops first match of the season to Franklin County 1-0

www.centralkynews.com

FRANKFORT¿— While the Danville boys were winning four out of the last five regional titles, Brent Beauman said players just made the plays that needed to be made at the right time.

Danville Moves on in All A Classic

The Danville Ads cruised to an 8-0 win over the visiting Pikeville Panthers in the Region final of the All A Classic Tournament for small schools. DHS got goals from five different players including two for sophomore Noe Ayala and a Jake Winkler hatrick. Winkler's second score was the 77th of his career, breaking Steve Smith's all time Danville record. After making the long trip from eastern Kentucky, the Panthers gave good effort and the match was scoreless after 15 min. But the Ads possession game and solid back line eventually wore them down, resulting in good combination play and lots of shot opportunities. Danville outshot the Panthers 32-2.

Ad Facts: The win secures a trip to the All A State Cup Finals set for the weekend of September 17 at Sower Field in Frankfort. This will be the eighth consecutive trip for the Ads, who are among the best all time in appearances over the history of the tournament.

Danville Takes Out Briar Jumpers in All A Regional Semi

The Ads played a solid game against Somerset at Reynolds Field Thursday night in the regional semifinal of the All A Classic tournament for small schools. The two sides are Region 16 rivals with a long history of exciting matches in the All A and post season.

The Ads midfield was without Christian Gateskill-Fuqua, but controlled possession early and tested the Somerset defense with through balls. Shawn Ramos was active running on to these and his pressure led to a Jumper foul in the box and the first score. Jake Winkler converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Shortly after more good work from Ramos won him a ball and his feed found John Thompson who drilled a shot from distance inside the left post for the second Ad goal. The third was set up by a deep run from Winkler who crossed and found a streaking Noe Ayala to put the Ads up comfortably at the break.

Noe would return the favor on a similar cross and finish to Winkler to start the second half and the Ads never looked back from there. They will take on Pikeville Saturday afternoon at Reynolds in the regional final for a chance to move on to the All A State Cup in Frankfort in September.

Ad Facts: The Ads are 10-0-0 against Somerset over their last 10 meetings and have not lost to them since 2002. The boys were sporting spiffy new Nike home unis tonight. Thanks to all who back the Danville soccer programs through our annual fundraising events. Your support has led to new equipment, uniforms and one of the best soccer turfs in the state.

Danville 1  GRC 0

Danville took on the George Rogers Clark Cardinals in Winchester Saturday night in front of a large home crowd intent seeing their side prevail over the #20 ranked Ads.  After an early feeling out period, Danville got down to business and started working their possession game.  Without much of an attack, GRC plays a defensive style relying on keeper Connor Blankenship and senior sweeper and team captain Jerod Metz to keep them in the game.  They did this for the most part in the first half with the best Danville opportunities a loose ball in the box that Dewayne Yocum could not put away and several close calls on a succession of corner kicks.  The defense was physical, and many late challenges were not called.  Meanwhile the Ad defense was doing a good job getting to balls and stopping runs early with keeper Matt Oster directing traffic well from the back.  GRC would manage only two shots from distance in the first half.

The center ref spoke with the GRC AD at the half about unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of the fans, and shortly after the half started had some words with the GRC student section, although in my view their rap was pretty ordinary for a road matches in a hostile environment.  Danville had some good runs early in the half and in the 53rd minute they broke through on a pass from Jake Winkler to Drafton Peck who finished nicely from inside the 18 to gain the 1-0 edge.  The Ads appeared to pull back a little after that, and GRC had their best chance of the night on a Nate Wells open look from about 20 yards out that was hit well, but sailed just over the crossbar.  This emboldened the home side and as the game approached the 65th minute every Danville possession was being challenged hard as GRC was pushing for an equalizer.  3 yellow cards were handed out in a 2 minute period for flagrant fouls, with one nasty hit on Carson Coulter breakout that was worthy of a red card and maybe a misdemeanor charge.  The Ads could not convert any of the resulting free kicks,  but kept their composure well until the 73rd minute when Christian Gateskill-Fuqua was steamrolled at the midfield by GRC defender Ray Borja and grabbed Borja as he went down.  Both were shown quick red cards and the sides played 10v10 for the remainder of the game.  Despite some continued chippy play the Admirals were never really challenged and closed out the match to gain their first win of the season.

Ad Facts: According to the 'KHSAA DQ Reports on File' both players shown red cards last night are listed and are required to serve '2' games suspensions.  The KHSAA is stressing sportsmanship, and 2 games is  the mandatory minimum suspension for any red card – a hefty penalty for what in this case may have only warranted a yellow card.

Danville 3  Model 3

The Ads opened their 2011 season with a very entertaining match at Richmond vs the Model Lab HS Patriots.  Model beat the Ads in their final regular season game last year – one of only 4 losses on the season – so Danville was looking to even up the extended home and home doubleheader.  With many new faces in the starting lineup for DHS this would be a good early test and a chance for Coach Beauman to get a look at how his young squad would respond under pressure.

Inexperience was evident early as some miscommunication in the back resulted in spotting the Pats a sloppy goal in the first few minutes, but the boys gradually settled down.  Possession turned Danville’s way in the second 20 minutes and after an apparent Danville score was called back for offsides, the Ads scored twice just before the half to silence a boisterous home crowd.  The first came after a pretty Noe Ayala shot was tipped just over the bar by Model keeper Turner Curtis.  The resulting Jake Winkler corner kick was chested nicely by Damir Karapandzic into the back of the net.  34 seconds later Christian Gateskill-Fuqua followed with a blast off a headed feed from Carson Coulter to put DHS on top at the break.

Despite some mistakes, the Ads showed good poise throughout the match.  Model tied it up in the 55th min on a corner kick and the Ads responded with a goal, but again it was taken off the board by a sketchy offsides call.  The play was physical, competitive and fun to watch and Model looked like they had it iced when Senior striker Hunter Conner finished a nice through ball with less than 3 minutes on the clock.  No quit in these Ads though, and good grit and determination won them a free kick just outside the 18.  Drafton Peck didn’t wait to get his 10 yards and hit a low runner just inside the left post to score with only 90 seconds to play and gain a draw.  Good match!
