This Month’s Poem

New moments of arrival
Honestly now
The moment may in fact
Have arrived
Hat in hand
Winking mischievously with a fall back grimace
This, then
The time in mind
A watershed indicator, blinking
Smoothing the murky macadam
For the wheeling journey
A visionary caress
Intimacy the plagiarized promise
A mismanaged borrowing, incapable of attribution
Clumsily shuffling amidst the branched melodies
Night dark spotlighted road twists
A sudden slanting of beam
Wind-broken movements chiming in
Ambulant maneuvering with anonymous declaration
Not crystal, yet clear and cold
Beneath the veil, a semblance of authenticity
Among the words playing, an obligatory effort
To be communicatively competent
With pattern and purpose
Old shoes showing character
The dog sniffing suspiciously
Mud fragments tracing boundaries
Door opening
Hoping for more than the pretense of perception
The first eye movement and lip quiver
Narrating the genuine welcome
The gentle head turn
Illuminated by wood stove fire
Coats quickly hung
Layers shed to accept new warmth
Dylan’s toes too numb to step
Our wobbly two-step version
Finding a carpeted path
Under the sideboard memorial
And the fresh documents, sighing in relief
Giving us all pause to wonder
While we set the next scene.
