Riverside Flood May 2009
Riverside Flood May 2009
Twenty-five years and two days after the flood that saw Troublesome Creek rise into school classrooms and faculty homes, Troublesome showed signs of entering again. Around 5:30 am Saturday morning a loud crack woke faculty at the lower campus. A large slip sent trees and branches into the Hostetler Memorial and on both sides of the Beams’ van. Electricity went off as electrical lines fell when the electric pole slid with the trees. At that time water was already halfway across the baseball field.
After a week of much rain, Friday night and the early hours of Saturday May 8-9th brought a continuous downpour that quickly rose the waters up and into the maintenance building and gymnasium, across the baseball and softball fields, around the faculty building, and over the lower campus road.
By the time faculty could move some bicycles to the faculty porch and pack a few clothes, water was starting to surround the vehicles on lower campus. Personal vehicles were driven through rising water across the baseball field to safety. Unfortunately, Coach Keck had gone camping and his car was not saved.
As staff and friends scurried to move equipment higher in the maintenance building and gymnasium, Troublesome continued to rapidly rise, surrounding the school and faculty homes on upper campus and entering Drushal Memorial Church basement.
Other parts of Breathitt County were flooded and affected by mud slips. Highway 476 was blocked in various places and homes and churches affected by flood waters. Perhaps the most devasted area in Breathitt County was along route 30 west of Jackson with many folk losing everything they owned.
We’re thankful for the many friends who prayed, helped us clean up, or provided food and drinking water. We’re so thankful the waters went down before getting in any of the classrooms or faculty homes.
25 years after the “84 flood”
Yet as Troublesome rose, the prayers of friends and family rose to God and He answered in a mighty way. The flood waters stopped as they reached near the road on upper campus. As quickly as the waters rose they receded. By Sunday evening electricity was restored and we continued to have water available for cleanup.
