Back in full swing

Yesterday was the one week mark of being back in Bundibugyo.  It was hard to believe; I was sure it had to be at least two weeks, but in fact it was only one.  Life has jumped started right back into gear.  Many things have happened since being back and here are just a few.  I arrived Friday evening of last week.  It was good to see familiar faces of team mates and reconnect.  That night Sarah and I stayed up talking late into the night catching up on over a month of news and happenings.  During that conversation however, we had a rat who seemed adamant to let me know he was there.  Sarah bravely trapped him under a basin for Nathan to kill the next day. I asked Sarah to check my room, just to make sure there were no rats to bug me in the night. An old ritual that we do because there are many a sleepless night with rats rummaging in my room. And yes, there was one hiding in my desk. We did not catch that one, but he was removed from my room.  Two rats in my first night back!  Saturday was filled with going to the market, seeing old friends, unpacking trunks, and getting resettled.  Monday, I was back at teaching. But not without a little morning excitement of a rat swimming in our dirty dish water.  It was just the Pierce children for Monday and Tuesday at school.  Then on Tuesday evening the Myhres arrived with the interns from Kampala.  There are two guy interns who will be here this summer serving the people and learning about Bundibugyo.  So the rest of the week was full days of school and soccer and everything else.
Wednesday morning I had prayer, so the team prayed for me.  It is a blessing to have the community here that we do.  I am thankful to be able to share what is on my heart and know that have people along side me praying for me daily as I adjust back.  Wednesday evening, I also had a new experience.  Heidi was leaving after dinner and made a “oh-no” sound while walking out the door.  Being that I hate rats and Sarah hates spiders, we were both momentarily frozen in fear not knowing what the oh-no was all about.  Well, Heidi called for me, which then meant that it had to be a spider.  It was a tarantula. My first full grown one I have seen and it was huge and disgusting.  It was backed in a corner from Heidi and Chloe the dog and had its front legs up in defense position.  Heidi emptied a can of doom on the spider as it moved away and I ran and got the golf club and proceeded to smash it to pieces.  It was unbelievably disgusting, but at least it was right outside and we were able to kill it.
This week has definitely not lacked from excitement.  It has been a full week, but then again just the normal thrills of everyday life here. However, on a more sober note, we did receive some sad news about an old teammate Kevin Bartkovich, who is currently in the hospital after collapsing while running due to a heart issue. This morning we received good news that he woke up and was speaking with JD his wife, but it has been a hard few days waiting eagerly for news on his condition.  It has certainly brought us to our knees in prayer.  We ask for you to continue to join us in prayer for Kevin and his family.  JD is his wife and they have four children, Joe, Louisa, Nate, and Savannah.  You can read updates from their blog: http://kwegesiya.blogspot.com/
