Half Pi Wrap
Half Pi Wrap
In continuing my series of summer patterns, I’m excited to release the Half Pi Wrap. This piece evolved with lots of stages. My original plan was to create a rectangle with curved edges to avoid extra thickness (since knit fabric is quite thick enough for summer garments already.) As I was considering this, I ran across Jared Flood’s Girasole, a stunning example of the Pi Shawl, originally (as far as I know) made popular by Elizabeth Zimmerman. I had been fascinated by this concept before, but decided to revisit it & look into it further. I decided that I didn’t want to make a full circle since I didn’t want to have the double-thickness of folding the shawl in half, so I began to explore how to make a semi-circle instead. What I came up with is the Half Pi Wrap. It starts off with garter stitch that is quickly increased to make a growing half-circle. Throughout the pattern, a garter stitch border is worked that is incorporated into the ties at the end. The piece uses two lace patterns divided subtly by a dramatic increase row. It’s worked all in one piece with minimal finishing required - just weave in the ends & block. Though I mostly envision this as a swim wrap, I’ve also worn it wrapped around my shoulders and tied like a heart-warmer shawl.
