Summer Scholars 2009

I’m Mary Caroline Dyke, the DukeEngage intern working with Emily K for the summer.  Along with the help of last summer’s DukeEngage intern, Anders Campbell, we will teach an elective class where the students will create their own version of Sports Illustrated magazine.  Projects include: writing feature stories, interviewing student-athletes at Duke, and writing a game report about their own cricket match. We hope to supplement these projects with the advice and expertise of a reporter from the News and Observer. Over the course of the 5 week program, the Summer Scholars students will compile all the necessary components of a quality magazine.

This website will be used as a supplement to the final magazine.  Our editors, Jamillah Carter and Aliviana Najjar will publish weekly video and written commentary to give everyone the inside scoop on the class proceedings.  To showcase our students’ reporting skills, we’ll also post their interviews with Duke student-athletes conducted and filmed by the students.  This is intended to be a space for our students to share their projects and to reflect on the progress of the class.

The Pioneer Scholars Summer Scholars Program is an academic opportunity that ensures that students maintain and advance their academic skills throughout the summer.
