Academy of martial arts

The Academy of Martial Arts India, was founded by Pervez B. Mistry, then a Sho-Dan in Judo in 1964 and today, is one of the oldest and highly respected Martial Arts Institution in India.

In 1967 Sensei Mistry through his student and life time friend Sensei Burge Cooper got the opportunity to study Judo and Karate-do at the Seibukan Academy in Kyoto, Japan, under Kancho Masafumi Suzuki 10th. Dan.

He returned home to India in 1969, with a third Degree Black Belt in Judo and a first degree Black Belt in the Goju Ryu style of Karate-do. He is the first Indian to bring back this art that had left our shores more than two centuries ago known then and today as “Kalaripyat”.

In 1978 Sensei Mistry joined Sensei Morio Higaonna and has trained under him ever since.Today Sensei Mistry  currently holds the 7th degree black belt and, is one of the senior most member of IOGKF. Sensei Morio Higaonna, 10th. DAN and now the head of the International Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-do Federation. Under his leadership, since its founding in 1979, the IOGKF now has more than 50 affiliated countries and still growing every year, as more and more people the world over recognize the legitimacy and purity of the IOGKF which traces its hereditary directly to the founder of the style of Okinawan Goju Ryu, Bushi Chogun Miyagi.

The Academy of Martial Arts India which is directly affiliated to the IOGKF since its inception has  followed the principles and objectives of teaching thousands from the general public and also the Para Military forces like the ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police), CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force),  BSF (Border Security Force), the Naval Commandos, the Dogra Regiment of the Indian Army, officers of the Customs & Vigilance Dept., International Airport Mumbai, and security and flight crew of  Air India.

The AMA India as per our IOGKF Principles and objectives, actively support our members, by keeping in touch through an inter active network,  specialized training seminars for each rank and grade  and  National and International Martial Art events for its members to participate, improve their current knowledge and skills and  keep themselves informed and up to date, and most importantly to have fun doing what they love to do; train hard, sweat together and build life long friendships.

In today’s world we are faced with crimes of violence from the gauntlet of  muggings to terrorist activity, and though I fully concede that  no one can defend himself or herself against an assailant armed with a weapon fired at from a distance, our training will ignite the latent “flight or fight response” of self preservation that has helped mankind to survive through the ages.

The aim of  IOGKF and AMA India, is to improve the “Quality of Life” for all our members to help make a positive impact on our society, our country INDIA and in the world.
