Founded in 2008 at the George Washington University, Students 4 Sustainability (S4S) is a group of highly motivated students engaged in sustainable development in a variety of innovative ways. S4S now consists of chapters at GW and Georgetown Universities in Washington, DC, and has members in universities and high schools in the United States. S4S partners with select organizations who use business and entrepreneurial ideas as a means of improving the lives of the over 2 billion people living on less than $2 a day. Most of the organizations S4S partners with are involved in providing microloans and marketplaces to entrepreneurs. By working with a variety of amazing organizations like Kiva.org, the Clinton Global Initiative, and TOMS Shoes, S4S members learn about many of the innovative practices in development today. To date, S4S has raised $5,000, and plans to raise $15,000 during the 2009‐10 school year! Providing tiny loans to the rural poor who otherwise don’t have access to banking facilities is one of the chief aims of Students 4 Sustainability. S4S currently makes microloans, often as little as $150, to entrepreneurs in Tanzania, Ukraine, Palestine and many other areas. S4S members have had the opportunity to meet with the pioneer of microlending, 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus, as well as many other leaders of the growing microfinance industry. Even with access to microloans, entrepreneurs often struggle to find a marketplace in their rural areas. To fix this issue, Students 4 Sustainability has partnered with networks of artisans and communities to sell handicrafts* produced by entrepreneurial individuals. S4S sells products on college campuses, in high schools, and at community events. S4S will soon be selling in DC‐area retail locations. Students 4 Sustainability invests profits from handicraft sales in microcredit loans, helping more entrepreneurs climb the ladder out of poverty.
