Badge #3 – Being My Best
In order to earn the badge “Being My Best” you’ll need to do the following:
1. Take a self portrait.
2. List five things that are wonderful about yourself.
3. List two things at which you are talented.
4. Get the names of the other people participating in this badge and send them a compliment in the mail or through e-mail.
5. Make an award for yourself for being great at ___________________ (fill in the blank with whatever suits you) Or for just being great in general.
6. Create a list of 5 goals for the year and 5 goals for next month and make it public.
The deadline for this badge is October 31, 2011.

Five things that are wonderful about me:
a. I’m interested. I like learning new things; I like being reminded of interests I used to have and might want to cultivate or investigate again. I like knowing things.
b. I’m enthusiastic. This goes along with being interested. I like sharing my knowledge and interests with other people. Enthusiastic: Having or showing intense and eager enjoyment, interest, or approval.
c. I’m smart. Yes, I am. I’m very smart. I am, in fact, wonderfully smart. And I like being smart.
d. I’m excited about the next stage in my life. Whatever that may be. I’ve carried this excitement along through all the next stages of my life, whether they’re stages in my age, situation, or location. This is different from enthusiasm in that I think enthusiasm is about the present and excitement here is about the future.
e. I’m grateful. I like being grateful: to God, in particular, but also to people for their help, because it reminds me of the wonderful qualities most humans, in my experience, have - and most people like to be helpful and I like to tell them thanks for being so. I like giving people an opportunity to help me. It seems to work out well for all of us. They feel useful (even, occasionally, superior) and I feel good that I’ve had a chance to help them feel that way.

Two things at which I am talented:
a. I’m talented at creating a home. I’m about to move into my 53d home and I know it will be comfortable and it will reflect me and my interests and my life. It will be filled with books and maps and textiles and food and drink and beautiful objects - and I will be very happy there. I will have my household goods unpacked within a few days and I will be fine. But then I will be very grateful when Chris & Donnell & Jo & Bill help me really settle it, be it with ideas or actual labor (hey, another wonderful thing about me: I like being grateful to people for their help, because it reminds me of the wonderful qualities most humans, in my experience, have - and most people like to be helpful and I like to tell them thanks for being so).
b. I’m talented at keeping myself occupied, so that I’m never bored. I cannot remember the last time I was bored, even in meetings at work (where there’s always a list to make, a mental game to play, a book to remember and to consider, a project to plan - there’s always something). And when I’m not at work, there are so many things to do and to think about - and people or nature or architecture or . . ., well, there’s always something. I love that there’s always something. That’s what keeps me interested - keeps me enthusiastic and optimistic. I love that’s there’s always something to learn. How awful not to feel that way; I’m so grateful to be the kind of person I am, at least in these respects.

Five goals for the next month:
a. Be organized for the move, including having my share of the packing done, with contents of boxes listed.
b. The contents of my pantry and freezer will be eaten.
c. I will spend a weekend at Sanibel Island, collecting shells and watching sunsets, and I will not feel one bit bad about doing this instead of #1 and #2
d. Lose 2 pounds. I’ve lost some weight recently and I’m happy about it. I haven’t been doing anything differently, so far as I know, but it’s likely that I’ve been happier at work so eating less to compensate. Two pounds is reasonable.
e. Complete badge #2 and the rest of badge #3.

Five goals for the coming year:
a. Settle into my new home and community, finding a church and establishing links to shops and the library and people I’ve not known before now.
b. Find a new companion. I am ready to have a new dog in my life.
c. Go back to school. I want to learn Latin.
d. Travel to Germany to see Holly (this entails setting and living on a budget).
e. Learn how to use my computers really well.

I want to send a compliment to Judah, the fourth participant in this badge, but don’t have an address for her. Otherwise, so far as I can tell, I have fulfilled requirement #4.
