Pheidole http://web.me.com/ajaynarendra/Ants/Myrmicinae/Pages/Pheidole.html The hyperdiverse genus of Pheidole is one of the most ecologically dominant groups containing more than 600 species. Most species are dimorphic, i.e., two morphologically distinct worker castes, with the minor workers and the major workers. The majors, often called as ‘soldiers’, usually have a disproportionately large head and are equipped with strong mandibles. Many species of this genus are specialist seed harvesters. Wilson’s mammoth synthesis on this genus in 2003 is the most recent and elaborate taxonomic work carried out on this genus.
