CONSCIOUSNESS
How can any of us know that another human being is conscious? In 2006, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to show, for the first time, that a patient who appeared to be entirely vegetative was in fact consciously aware. We have since reported on 4 patients (of 23) in a similar condition.
