Phil Yeh started Eastwind Studios in 1970. The first location was in Pepper Tree Faire near Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Yeh and his partner Mark Eliot painted a huge mural outside the building that stayed up for more than 25 years before it was torn down.

The partners started their own newspaper in 1973 while attending Cal State University Long Beach, CA. Its name was UNCLE JAM and it became a legend in the world of newspapers. In 1975, Yeh changed the name of the paper to Cobblestone to match his gallery name, but by 1977, UNCLE JAM was back and stayed until the 1990s. Then Yeh became caught up in global travels for his Cartoonists Across America & The World Tour.

Both Cobblestone and Uncle Jam prided themselves on bringing readers great artwork, great stories and exclusive interviews. Yeh's art direction gave the paper a unique look and he occasionally created the artwork for the front covers of the paper. In the days of exacto knives and zip-a-tone, the hand-cut color separations created some wonderful images in this paper, which went to full color in 1975. In 1977 Phil Yeh created and published one of the first modern American graphic novels in America, and he has 40 years of publishing experience. As he toured with Cartoonists Across America & The World to promote literacy, the arts and creativity his travels demanded more and more of Yeh's time. UNCLE JAM ceased publishing in 1990.

In 2009, Yeh introduced a special preview edition of UNCLE JAM as a full color magazine featuring an exclusive interview with Ray Bradbury, who had contributed poetry in 1975. That 97th issue began the newest chapter of the unique publication. As of Summer 2010, UNCLE JAM has returned to a quarterly publishing schedule.

Uncle Jam No. 98, Vol 37, Fall 2010

The cover of this special 37th anniversary issue features a newly-colored image by Lieve Jerger that Moebius created for Phil Yeh’s Winged Tiger graphic novel in 1993. We also have travel stories on Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and England featuring world coverage as only our writers and photographers can.  Continuing the anniversary theme, it’s the 100th birthday of the first appearance of Krazy Kat, considered by most experts as the finest comic strip ever created.

Uncle Jam 98 has an interview with Craig Yoe on some of the new books being released this year about this iconic cartoon character.

Other interviews include Texas artist Mark A. Nelson, Scottish artists John Chambers & Sandra Marrs, musicians Patrice Rushen, Hilary Williams, G.E. Smith and Taylor Barton. We also have an exclusive look at guitar builder Patrick Bubien’s workshop and his custom made instruments that have been signed by noted artists from around the world as part of The Winged Tiger’s Guitar Project.
