ON THE wall Olympia Grand Hall, London
2004
Selection of paintings for the ON THE WALL Art Fair in Olympia, September-October 2004, shows some of the latest work by Valery Koroshilov, produced in the last two years and most of it has never been exhibited publicly before. Among the subjects are Homage to Old Masters, Still Life and Human Figure. The Artist’s Statement includes the following notes with regard to the Homage:
“Though titled The Studios of X, Y and Z (the great Masters of Italian Renaissance) they show in fact, the objects of my own Studio, and a detail from a masterpiece. The things hung on the strings represent an aspect of the method, I believe these Masters composed their pictures by. For instance, the objects could have been borrowed, replaced, added later, or simply imagined (literally, out of the blue) for all kinds of reasons. I suppose, such approach represents a particularly cheeky form of Homage.
In addition to all this, there are some images which might appear, intentionally, not very serious at times, but they are, nevertheless, my genuine declarations of admiration to the great painters of the past.
There is a certain degree of symbolism in every picture as well, but I would prefer to talk about it when people see the paintings in the flesh. You have to see it On The Wall. They are quite big in size and surprisingly large-scaled, too.”
Valery’s background as an artist is not at all traditional. He studied architecture and spent a number of years designing, teaching and researching architecture (in Moscow, Amsterdam and London). With no formal art school training, at the age of twenty-eight, he began to paint in whatever free time was available.
His artistic career has been launched in 1992 after a successful exhibition of graphic works in Amsterdam, where he then worked as an architect for Alberts & Van Huut, one of the leading Organic Style design practices in Europe. That first public exposure led to the invitations from three more galleries to show his work. Since then he exhibits regularly throughout Europe, most recently in Belgium, Greece, Russia, United Kingdom, as well as USA.
After moving to London in 1995 Valery has held several shows in London galleries including Roy Miles, Albermarle, The Mall Galleries, Westminster Gallery, West-Eleven and the BOC Covent Garden Festival.
Valery’s work presented by Britart.com, has been featured at the Classic FM Festival aux Quat’Saisons, Oxfordshire, where his paintings accompanied the performances of some of the most creative classical musicians of our time: Emma Johnson, the Sorrel Quartet and Julian Lloyd Webber.
He was also among the first London artists to be featured in the Getty Images, Seattle, launched in 2000 as the largest website for fine art images in the world.
Valery Koroshilov’s work can be found in several public and corporate collections worldwide including The Slade School of Fine Arts & University College London, International School of Amsterdam, Dionysious Frescoes Museum in Russia, Royal Surgical Aids Society in London, the Medici Hotel in Brugge, Castle Aertrycke in Ghent, and others.
Images of Valery’s work are included into the BritArt Directory 2001, and most recently have been featured in The Times, The World of Interiors, The London Guide (all April 2004), and also The Sunday Times article, April 2003.
